This tutorial creates two blocks.

Cut 4 pieces that are 1.5″ x 10″ of one fabric, cut 5 pieces that are 1.5″ x 10″ of another fabric, cut 11 pieces that are 1.5″ x 10″ of a background fabric.

The pieces need to be 1.5″ wide, but the length does not have to exact because you will be improvising and trimming the blocks.

Sew all 4 of the first set of fabric strips to a background strip. Sew the sections together, alternating fabrics.  Finish this panel by sewing a background strip to the long edge of the other non-background fabric.

Sew 4 of the 2nd set of fabric strips to a background strip. Sew all of these together, alternating fabrics. Finish this panel by sewing the remaining non-background fabric to the long edge of the background fabric.

Cut each panel in half perpendicular to the strips.

Sew a background strip to the edge of one of the four sections, again perpendicular to the strips. Sew a section of the other fabric to the other side of the background fabric. You might want to carefully line up the two sections so that the background and non-backgrounds are alternating on either side of the center strip. Or you might not!

Now trim to desired size. I trimmed to 8.5″ square.

Repeat with the other sections … You now have two blocks!
